Mason-Dixon's Buckeystown workshop is coming fast!!!

Bishop Clagett Conference Center Buckeystown, MD
October 12-15, 2014

October in Buckeystown, in the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains, is a great venue for a rug hooking workshop. The
Claggett Conference Center has spacious, well lit classrooms, a comfortable dining room and numerous places to gather for a chat with friends.  In addition to classes, there will be a wine and cheese opening reception and a school store chocked full of tempting rug hooking accessories to name just two of several things planned to make this a very special event.  Please mark your calendar now!  Hope to see you there.
                               Pat Donoho, Director Buckeystown

Workshop
OUR TEACHERS:
Jon Ciemiwicz:  Always a favorite with our students, Jon has been hooking rugs for 17 years and teaching workshops throughout the US and Canada for the past 13 years.  He has had several rugs featured in the ATHA magazine and some of his rugs have been selected by the judges for inclusion in Celebrations.  The object of this workshop will be to create a rug based on a photograph of almost anything.  It could be your pet, some wildlife, a family member, an old house, a covered bridge, a beach scene or about anything else you like.  Both narrow and wide cut pieces are welcome.

Sarah Guiliani:  Noted for her portraits and pictorials Sarah is willing work with any patterns in fine cuts.

Jayne Hester:  What’s Black & White and Brown all over?  “Jayne’s Rugs”,  primitive rugs for today.  Old is the NEW new.  Little Miss Muffett sat on her tuffet hooking a primitive rug.  Along came a spider and sat down beside her and said …”YOU NEED MORE BROWN!”  This should give you an idea how much fun her class will be.  Wide cuts, of course.

Wendy Miller:  Wendy Miller learned to rug hook in 1999, and in 2001, started selling her rug designs under the business name of The Red Saltbox™.  She has two rug pattern lines, one antique inspired line of patterns and one folk art pattern line that is based on Wendy’s modern “primitive folk art” style. She hooks almost exclusively in a #8.5 cut and is an accomplished rug hooker.  Her award winning rugs have also been in numerous exhibits, as well as finalists in Rug Hooking Celebrations XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, and she served as a Celebrations judge for Celebrations XIX.

Wendy Miller specializes in hooking rugs with wide cut strips of wool, using lots of textured and plaid wools, and achieving an instant old-age appearance.  She achieves that appearance through color, texture and value.  She specializes in cuts #8, #8.5 and #9.  The focus in the class will be working with wide cuts, and how to achieve an old-age appearance to your rug through color planning.  All color planning will be done during class.

Costs include tuition plus room and board (all meals beginning with dinner on Sunday through lunch on Wednesday).

Jane Halloway-Green taught and demo’ed at Common Ground for many years before she stopped hooking. This year there are no hooking classes but we hope to change that for next year. In the meantime…What could be nicer than to sit and hook while listening to good music with friends?

More February 2013 Mason Dixon News

Deanna Williford had a great idea for our monthly meetings.  She suggested we have a mini rug show each month related to the season or current holiday.  So we'd like to start this month and the theme is LOVE.

The rug you bring can be something you love, someone you love or a love symbol.  You get the idea.  Hope you'll like it and will bring a rug for everyone to see and admire.

It's going to be 50 degrees on Tuesday!  Bring a snack to share and something to hook and make a day of it at our February meeting.

See you there!
Pat Duggan

From Barbara Barton and the Mason-Dixon Board

On Wed, Feb 13, 2013 at 2:48 PM, Pat Duggan <masondixonatha@gmail.com> wrote: Hope you are planning to attend the Mason-Dixon ATHA February meeting next Tuesday, 2/19. In addition to our business meeting there will be a punch needle workshop which Judy Seymour will facilitate.  We are also hoping Ramona Cann will be there with copies of her new dye book which you might want to purchase.

If you signed up for Judy Seymour's workshop plan to bring the following supplies;
· Frame (that you normally hook with)
· Small sharp pointed scissor
· Sharp pencil
· Black Sharpie marking pen (fine or extra fine)
· Worsted weight yarn

Judy Seymour ( judyseymour1@verizon.net ) will have either #10 or # 14 Oxford needles to buy or use.  If you decide to purchase a punchneedle the price is $28.00 for the needle alone or $35.00 for the needle with box, handbook, and stitch gauge.

And-this is important-if you are drawing your own pattern remember that you will be punching from the back of the pattern.  That means that letter or numbers on your pattern must be drawn in reverse (backwards).

The next learning opportunity we have scheduled is a Purse Workshop with Norma Batastini. The dates are May 21 (12:30-4PM May 22 and 23 (10AM-4PM) and May 24 (10AM-1PM).  The workshop will be held in the church where we meet each month.  Participants will have a choice of patterns that can be purchased from the teacher or they can draw their own pattern.  The workshop will cost $140.   Patterns are additional and may be purchased directly from Ms. Batastini.  Contact Sharon Kollman (sakollman@verizon.net ) for more information or to register.  In order for the teacher to work with you to plan your project before the workshop it is important for you to register early.  March 1 is suggested.

This year the Maryland Sheep'n'Wool Festival is being held May 4th and 5th.  Mason-Dixon will have a booth where hooking related supplies will be sold and where rug hooking will be demonstrated.  Members are needed to demonstrate.  Contact Barbara Barton if you can help.  If you have hooking related items (wool, patterns, books, frames, cutters to name a few) to sell the Sheep'n'Wool Festival is the perfect venue to do so.  Contact Pat Duggan (masondixonatha@gmail.com or 301 872 0642 for information or to become a Mason-Dixon vendor.  Last-but not least-there will be a rug show at the Sheep'n'Wool Festival.  The event website currently has a message saying the 2013 information will be available on 2/15.  Next month we'll send you information about how to enter items in this show.  Please plan to participate.

The term of the current Mason-Dixon officers expires in June 2013.  The incoming board will serve beginning July 2013 and continue until June 2015.  Volunteers are needed to serve as treasurer and as membership chair.  None of the officer duties are hard.  They just require a little time.  Contact Barbara Barton if you are willing to participate in the ongoing Mason-Dixon management.

Hope to see you on Tuesday,
Barbara Barton and the Mason-Dixon Board

Dear Mason-Dixon Hookers,
If you haven't taken the time to look to see who brought home winners ribbons from the Maryland State Fair, you can go to:

http://www.marylandstatefair.com/marylandstatefair/uploads/File/2012_HA_Hooking_Results.pdf

and browse through the lists.

(you might have to go to the State Fair site and work your way to that list which is under competitions, and right below the link that tells you about the categories.)

I've attached a photo of the Viewer's Choice award rug with the proud ribbon winner along with our fair staff!  I believe the winner's name is Mary Grabus but this is so embarrassing! I took the picture and wrote her name down but can't for anything find the bit of paper that I wrote her name on! sigh!  the challenges of an overfull mind!  (that must be it, right? not just forgetful or aging? say it ain't so! lol)

Anyway, my apologies if I have gotten her name wrong!

Next, take a look at what chapter members have been writing about in recent ATHA Newsletters!

Sarah Province co-wrote with Laura Pierce an article, “Little River Inn Rug Camp 2011 – Hooking on the Pacific Ocean”, June/July.

And, last but not least, I want to thank the Mountain State Fiber Artists for the always well-run and fun-filled Fiber Fest held in August at Yellow Springs, WV. The weather was good to us that day, the lunch memorable and the vendors cheerful and ready to help with any question or project. We’ll now look ahead and look forward to the other two large hook-ins that bring Region 3 chapters together: Goose Creek Ruggers Hook-in in January and the Virginia Rugfest in April. Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Val Carter
ATHA Region 3 Representative
